L'Oréal and IBM Partner, Innovating in the Intersection of AI, Beauty, and Sustainability
IBM recently announced a collaboration with L'Oréal—one of the world’s leading beauty companies—which will integrate IBM’s generative AI (GenAI) technology into L'Oréal’s Research and Innovation teams. This partnership serves to supercharge L'Oréal’s capacity to surface transformative insights in cosmetic formulation data, with the intent of increasing the use of sustainable raw materials to reduce energy and material waste.
IBM and L'Oréal’s integration combines expertise in cosmetic science with cutting-edge AI technologies, propelling scientific discovery for sustainable, ecologically responsible cosmetic innovation. As a result, IBM and L'Oréal are pioneering an intersection of AI, beauty, chemistry, and technology, according to IBM.
"This collaboration is a truly impactful application of generative AI, leveraging the power of technology and expertise for the good of the planet", said Alessandro Curioni, IBM fellow, vice president, Europe and Africa and director IBM Research Zurich. "At IBM, we believe in the power of purpose-built, customized AI to help transform businesses. Using IBM's latest AI technology, L'Oréal will be able to derive meaningful insights from their rich formula and product data to create a tailored AI model to help achieve their operational goals and continue creating high quality and sustainable products."
This custom AI foundation model is designed to increase the productivity of L'Oréal’s Research and Innovation teams, based on a large quantity of formulations and component data points. This model will empower L'Oréal to formulate new products, reformulate existing products, and optimize scale-up production with renewable ingredients and a goal of greater customization and inclusivity for its consumers around the world.
"As part of our Digital Transformation Program, this partnership will extend the speed and scale of our innovation and reformulation pipeline, with products always reaching higher standards of inclusivity, sustainability, and personalization,” said Stéphane Ortiz, head of innovation Métiers and product development, L'Oréal Research & Innovation.
